Builder Gel FAQs

What is builder gel?

Builder gel is a thick, strengthening nail enhancement product used to create longer, stronger, and more durable nails.

How does builder gel work?

Builder gel is a thick-viscosity gel system designed to add structure, strength, and length to the natural nail. It functions by creating a durable overlay that can be worn alone or as a base for gel polish or enhancements.

How does builder gel differ to normal gel polish?

Unlike regular gel polish, builder gel has a thicker consistency that allows it to add structure, making it ideal for repairing broken nails, extending nail length with forms or tips, or simply reinforcing natural nails.

How long can it last before requiring a fresh set?

With proper application and client aftercare, a builder gel overlay or extension can typically last 3 to 4 weeks before requiring maintenance.

Infills/Refills: Most clients return around the 2–4 week mark for an infill. At this stage, new product is applied to rebalance the nail structure, and to cover natural nail growth.

Full Fresh Set: A completely fresh set is usually recommended every 3 to 4 appointments (around 8–12 weeks), depending on product condition, lifting, or design changes. This ensures the integrity of the nails and allows the tech to fully refresh the application.

We recommend to always start with a layer of clear to file back to, Dependent on client and lifestyle depends on how often a fresh set should be reapplied. Starting with clear means you can keep an eye on your clients natural nail at each appointment.

Does builder gel damage nails?

Builder gel itself does not damage the natural nail when it is applied, maintained, and removed correctly. Any damage usually comes from improper technique or poor aftercare, not from the product.

How do I apply builder gel?

Applying builder gel correctly requires proper nail prep, product control, and an understanding of structure. For in-depth training on builder gel application, it’s best to take a professional course. CJP Education offer accredited courses that cover builder gel and other enhancement methods, helping you master the correct techniques and avoid common mistakes.
